How to Extend a Walk-In's Life Cycle

By Staff -- Foodservice Equipment & Supplies, 6/1/2007

Walk-in maintenance mainly involves keeping things clean. Operators can perform a number of simple tasks to help ensure a long service life for the unit. Please note the list below contains general maintenance information and should not be substituted for the manufacturer’s requirements and recommendations.
  1. Keep the door and door gaskets clean.
  2. Wipe down and oil the walk-in walls a minimum of once a month.
  3. Annually empty walk-ins, bring them to room temperature, hose them down and air-dry them.
  4. Have a certified technician clean condenser coils every three months and drain the drip pan every six months.
  5. Inspect the condenser monthly to ensure the air supply remains free of restrictions.
  6. A freezer tends to lose its freezing ability when not properly maintained. Perform regular maintenance checks on the evaporator and properly defrost the unit each month.
  7. Ice buildup on the evaporator represents one of the biggest problems walk-in freezers face. This happens when the door remains open or if the refrigeration system is too small for the application. Leaks in the door also can cause ice buildup. The problem can be remedied by adjusting the sweep gasket or by replacing the door gasket.
