Global Foodservice Traffic Sluggish in Q4 2012

Spending increases helped offset slow traffic, according to NPD Group.

Increases in global check averages brought foodservice spending up in many countries despite sluggish traffic, according to The NPD Group, a global information company.

Outside of China, where traffic increased 8 percent, most countries experienced traffic declines or growth no greater than 1 percent for the fourth quarter of 2012, reports NPD's CREST report, which tracks commercial foodservice usage in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States.

Foodservice visits in Australia were up 1 percent. Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States had flat traffic counts. France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Span reported declines, with Spain facing the steepest decline at 3 percent.

Foodservice spending increased in Australia (2.3 percent), Canada (3.5 percent), China (26.8 percent), Germany (1.3 percent), the United Kingdom (.6 percent) and the United States (2.1 percent).
