C-Stores Can Offset Pain at Pump through Foodservice
An old cliché goes “all market conditions favor someone.” While most foodservice operators continue to struggle with the impact of rising gas prices, an unlikely segment may be poised to cash in, according to “Target: C-Stores, A Growing Opportunity on the Foodservice Landscape,” a research report released by Chicago-based Technomic.

NSF Receives Silver LEED Certification
NSF International received the silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification for the recent expansion of its Ann Arbor, Mich.-based corporate headquarters and laboratories. To achieve silver LEED status, NSF demonstrated that the design of its new building is saving 26 percent of energy costs when compared to traditional buildings.

Steak n Shake announced that Jeffrey Blade, the company’s interim president, executive vice president and chief financial and administrative officer, has resigned.  Blade said he wished to pursue other interests. 

CFESA Elects New Officers and Board Members

The Commercial Food Equipment Service Association (CFESA) announced the election of John Swanson, of Bildon Parts & Service, as the organization’s president. In addition, CFESA announced the election of Scott Hester, Refrigeration Specialist Inc., to first vice president and Mark LeBerte, ATech Inc., was elected second vice president.

New Toastmaster Nu-Vu Sales Manager
Bill Wright joined Toastmaster and Nu-Vu as central regional sales manager. In this position, Wright is responsible for developing and managing selling opportunities through representative and distributor networks in 22 states. 

Dykstra Appointed President of Lincoln Foodservice
Enodis plc appointed company veteran Gary Dykstra president of Lincoln Foodservice Products, effective Aug. 4. Dykstra began his career in foodservice in 1986 at Garland Commercial Range, where he served as comptroller and program manager before moving into executive-level roles.

Unemployment Claims Flat in Mid-June
The Department of Labor announced that it received 384,000 initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week that ended on June 21, a figure that is unchanged from the prior week.

Consumer Confidence Drops in May
The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index fell by 7.7 points in May to 50.4. The measure’s two component indices, the Present Situation Index and the Expectations Index, both fell during the month.

Manufacturing Sector Expands in June
Following four consecutive months of decline, the domestic manufacturing sector expanded in June, according to a report from the Institute for Supply Management.


Durable Goods Orders Rise in May
New orders for manufactured durable goods posted a slight increase in May to approximately $213.6 billion, according to the Department of Commerce. Though that figure represents less than a 0.1-percent increase, it also breaks a string of three consecutive monthly declines for new orders.

DOC Releases Retail, Foodservice Figures
The U.S. Department of Commerce has released its advanced monthly figures for retail and foodservice sales for the month of May.


RPI Posts May Increase
The National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Performance Index posted an increase of 0.2 points in May. The RPI now stands at 98.6.

New CEO for Fazoli’s

Fazoli’s restaurants named Carl Howard chief executive officer, replacing Bob Weissmueller, who retired. Howard most recently served as president and CEO of Damon’s International. 

Ball Joins Enodis as VP Business Development
Enodis USA announced that Dennis Ball has joined the team as vice president of business development for the United States. In his new position, Ball will focus on building relationships with the consultant community throughout the country.

Cleveland Range Appoints New Sales Manager
Cleveland Range appointed Michael Aguirre as the new Cleveland sales manager for the Eastern region. Aguirre will report directly to Bob Norlander, VP sales and marketing.

American Culinary Federation Award Winners
The American Culinary Federation (ACF) announced its 2008 Achievement of Excellence Award winners. The winners span eight categories and the ACF will recognize them during its  2008 National Convention in Las Vegas, July 14-17.
