In a typical restaurant, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) account for more than 30 percent of annual energy consumption. That being the case, it makes sense for foodservice operators to keep their HVAC tuned up and operating at peak efficiency.

Tip of the week
A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study found that almost 60 percent of the motors driving building fan systems are oversized by at least 10 percent, with an average oversizing of 60 percent. “Rightsizing” a fan system, or better matching motor capacity to the requirements of the load, is an excellent way to save energy in air distribution systems. A HVAC contractor should evaluate whether the motors driving a foodservice operation’s HVAC fans could be replaced with smaller, premium efficiency motors.
