Chain Operating Report for August 28

One casual-dining chain adds better-for-you menu options while several others look to expand their reach both domestically and abroad in this week's Chain Operating Report.

In an attempt to provide customers with more healthful options, California Pizza Kitchen added five globally-inspired items to its menu with an emphasis on big flavor and lower calorie counts. Known as New Adventures, the new menu items include: quinoa and arugula salad, fire-roasted chile relleno, shrimp scampi zucchini fettuccine, grilled chicken chimichurri and cedar plank salmon.

Diversified Restaurant Holdings, Inc., the owner, operator, and franchisor of Bagger Dave's Legendary Burgers Tavern and a leading franchisee for Buffalo Wild Wings (BWW), bought eight BWW restaurants located in Indiana and Illinois for $14.7 million.

Dickey's BBQ opened a location in Grand Island, Neb. In addition, Dickey's opened a location in Ogden, Utah.

Jersey Mike's Subs opened a location in Jupiter, Fla., the chain's second location in that city. Jersey Mike's also opened a location in Laveen, Ariz.

Johnny Rockets opened its sixth restaurant in the Philippines.

For the second quarter of the company's 2013 fiscal year, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. reported a 4.3 percent increase in sales, including a 5.4 percent increase in same store sales.

Mellow Mushroom opened a restaurant in Louisville.

Fast-casual chain Pie Five Pizza Co. opened a location in Arlington, Texas. This location features the chain's initial foray into the breakfast daypart and it has extended operating hours. Pie Five Pizza Co. now operates seven locations.

Fast-casual sandwich chain Togos opened a location in Oxnard, Calif. operated by franchisee Robert Dorian. This is the fourth Togos location Dorian has opened in the past two years.

Saladworks opened its first Texas location in the city of Austin.

Veggie Grill, a West Coast-based fast-casual restaurant concept with a menu of 100 percent plant-based food, opened its first Seattle location.
