Restaurant Chain Updates

BJ’s, Caribou, Chipotle, Krispy Kreme and Shake Company made headlines this past week by announcing operating results, expansion plans and personnel news.

Benihana reported same-store sales declined 9.9 percent, including 12.2 percent at Benihana teppanyaki, 0.2 percent at RA Sushi, and 14.3 percent at Haru for the second quarter ending Oct. 11.BJ’s Restaurants, Inc. reported comparable restaurant sales decreased by 1.6 percent during its third quarter. The company also announced the opening of a BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse in Carlsbad, Calif. The company now operates 90 units system wide.Buffalo Wild Wings reported same-store sales increased 0.8 percent for company owned sites and 1.9 at franchised sites for the third quarter ending Sept. 27.Dan Hurdle was appointed senior vice president, retail operations and product management of Caribou Coffee. Hurdle assumes the retail operations leadership role in addition to his product management responsibilities, which he began in 2008. During the past year, Hurdle also oversaw the supply chain and store development functions at Caribou.Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (NYSE: CMG and CMG.B) reported comparable restaurant sales increased 2.7 percent for its third quarter ended Sept. 30.DineEquity, parent company of Applebee’s and IHOP, reported domestic, systemwide same-store sales decreased 1.1 percent and 6.5 percent, respectively, for the third quarter ending Sept. 30.J. Alexander’s reported same-store sales decreased 5.2 percent for the third quarter ending Sept. 27.Kona Grill reported same-store sales decreased 9.0 percent in the third quarter ending Sept. 30.Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation opened a location in Raleigh, N.C.The Shake Company (NYSE:SNS), and Western Sizzlin Corporation (NASDAQ:WEST) announced they executed an agreement for a wholly-owned subsidiary of Steak n Shake to merge with and into Western.
