Consider This: What to Weigh When Purchasing Air Curtains

Air curtains are simple units with minimal parts. Consequently, many have been in operation for 20 or more years.
Because there are different model types geared for a variety of tasks, operators should look at all the options available before making an air curtain purchase.
• Determine the air curtain’s application before choosing the unit type. For example, will a heated model be needed for temperature control by an outside doorway or is a blowing unit necessary for repelling insects by a dock entrance?
• If an air curtain is being used in a doorway, take into account prevailing winds and temperatures on outside openings as well as the existence of any drafts due to pressure differences.
• Make sure the air curtain is sized properly for the space by properly measuring the opening’s height and width.
• Ensure that the facility can accommodate the unit’s voltage.
• If a blowing air curtain is necessary, consider a tight air stream model that uses less energy.
• When purchasing a new air curtain, consider high-tech options that can be added on, such as programmable and remote controls.
• Be aware that there are different types of heated air curtains, including electric, steam and hot water versions.
• Look at the unit’s installation aspects, making sure these are suitable for the application. For instance, consider how the air curtain will be mounted and the ease of installation.
• If appearance is a factor, consider a low-profile or aesthetically designed unit.
• Determine if the model’s noise level will be intrusive to the surrounding environment.
• Check to ensure the air curtain meets NSF 37 standards.
