The Department of Labor announced that it received 497,000 initial claims for unemployment insurance during the week that ended on Sept. 27, an increase of 1,000 from the previous period. The DOL estimates that the effects of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike increased the weekly claim total by 45,000.
The latest data increases the four-week moving average for initial unemployment insurance claims by 11,500 to 474,000.
The DOL also released state-by-state information on claims filed the week of Sept. 20. Ten states reported declines in filings of at least 1,000 vs. the prior week. With 3,223 fewer claims, Kansas reported the steepest decline, though it did not identify the reason for the drop.
Six states reported increases of at least 1,000 in initial filings. Texas posted the most significant increase by a wide margin, with 22,235 more claims filed compared to the prior week. The increase was attributed to layoffs in the trade, finance and manufacturing sectors.
