How to Know When It’s Time to Replace Your Air Curtain

By Lisa White, contributing editor -- Foodservice Equipment & Supplies, October 16, 2008

As long as air curtains are kept clean, the unit should last for decades. However, there are a few signs that may signify replacement is necessary.

Dirt buildup can cause vibration, which may loosen or break parts. When this occurs, the cost of repair may warrant purchasing a new air curtain.

If the unit’s air stream doesn’t have enough velocity to reach the floor or the air stream is not uniform, the air curtain is not providing proper protection and should be replaced.

There are typically no warning signs before an air curtain’s motor breaks down; the unit will simply stop working. In this case, the cost of repairing the motor should be weighed against the price of buying a new unit.
